How to make a solar panel?

The solar panels, which are available in the market, are generally made of high quality, processed silicon that can be made available only in the huge factories and manufacturing units. However, it is possible to make a solar panel, which is ideally suited to a small household. Although this small version of solar panel does not rank too high on the efficiency scale, it is nevertheless, a smart investment when it comes to using it for small – scale purposes.

How difficult is it?

The solar panel can be made at home easily by making use of the kits, which are easily available at any and every electrical store nowadays. Individuals, who have prior experience in fixing up electrical equipments at home, will find the task of making a solar panel extremely easy.

The first and foremost requirement to make a solar panel is to make use of solar cells. These photovoltaic cells are quite easy to transport from one place to the other, as they are extremely light in weight.

An individual needs to choose a place where they plan to build the solar panel and install it. Ideally, the correct place to install the solar panel would be the backyard or garden of the house. The main reason for choosing these locations is that a backyard or the gardens are the only two places that can receive a large amount of sunlight.

After choosing the ideal location, an individual can start with the process of making a solar panel. Firstly, try placing the photovoltaic cells on the floor of the roof, backyard or the garden (whichever place an individual has chosen to make the solar panel). The photovoltaic cells need to be stacked one after the other in a horizontal arrangement. These cells need to be installed at such an angle from the sun that it is able to capture the maximum amount of sunlight and store it inside.

How do I get started?

Some other components, which are required to make a solar panel include a sheet of copper, two alligator clip leads, a micro-ammeter, which is sensitive enough to read currents between 10 to 50 microamperes and an electric stove. Some other requirements are table salt, tap water sand paper, and sheet metal shears.

In order to make a solar panel at home, an individual needs to cut a piece of the copper sheet, which is exactly the size of the electric stove? The copper sheet should be thoroughly cleaned of any possible traces of sulphide or other corrosion is entirely removed from the sheets. After the burner gets red-hot, the copper sheet will undergo color changes ranging from pinkish red to brown and finally developing a thick layer of black coat over it. After this, the stove and the copper sheet should be allowed to cool off gradually and a layer of soft red cuprous oxide will be left over the copper sheet.

This sheet of copper should be joined together with another sheet of copper, which is exactly of same size. The two sheets can be joined together with the help of alligator clips and placed into a wide-mouthed water jar or bottle. Care must be taken to ensure that the two sheets do not get in touch with each other. The clean copper sheet can be joined to the positive terminal while the copper sheet with cuprous oxide deposition on it should be connected to the negative terminal. The bottom of both the plates should be covered with saltwater. However, the clips of the two sheets at the top should be left dry.

The solar panel is thus created which can be ideally used to generate electricity from the heat of the sun.
