Photovoltaic modules
Photovoltaic modules are simply groups of photovoltaic cells that are interconnected in one packaged assembly. Photovoltaic cells are also known as solar cells, and the terms can be used interchangeably. When photovoltaic modules are grouped together in one installation, this is called a solar panel. Because photovoltaic cells require protection from rain, wind, and other environmental factors, they are often packaged together in one unit that may have a protective covering or a frame. This protective covering may be made from glass, metal, plastic, or even fiberglass. The entire package of photovoltaic cells, protective covering, and frame is called a photovoltaic panel. When photovoltaic panels are installed, they usually also need batteries for off-grid energy production, wiring, and an inverter.
Most photovoltaic modules are composed of a crystalline silicon material or a thin-film cell that is composed of cadmium telluride or silicon. These chemicals work together to create a continuous electric charge that helps produce energy that can be stored and distributed by the photovoltaic modules.
In order to function properly, photovoltaic modules need to be wired to each other and to the rest of a solar energy system. The wiring and solar cells must have protective coverings that reduce the chances of damage during manufacturing, shipping, and use. These photovoltaic modules also need to be protected from rain, sleet, snow, and freezing rain, as dampness and moisture can cause corrosion of any metal parts, which can reduce the effectiveness of the photovoltaic modules. Many installation firms secure the photovoltaic modules with additional metal and glass components to keep them protected from vandalism, environmental factors, and overheating.
There are two types of photovoltaic modules available for residential and commercial use. Rigid thin film modules are modules where the solar cells and the module itself are all produced in the same production line in a factory. A glass substrate is used to create the cell, and all electrical connections are put in place during production. Another sheet is usually added to laminate the module. Flexible thin film photovoltaic modules are also created on the same assembly line. However, this is accomplished by depositing a photoactive layer and other production laters on a substrate. Integration of electrical connections depends on the type of substrate used. If the substrate has insulation capabilities, then the connections can be integrated right there on the line. If the substrate has conduction capabilities, another method of electrical connection must be used.
The most obvious benefit of using photovoltaic modules is that energy production becomes less expensive, leading to substantial cost savings. Another benefit of using photovoltaic modules is that the environmental effects of traditional energy production are eliminated, making the use of photovoltaic modules a clean and environmentally safe alternative to traditional energy production methods. People who suffer from problems like allergies and asthma can also benefit from the use of photovoltaic modules because less pollution is created when the modules are in use. This reduces the amount of allergens in the air and can reduce irritation to the nasal passages, sinuses, lungs, and throat.
Using photovoltaic modules has many attractive benefits and the cost of installing photovoltaic modules is well worth it when the benefits are considered. Review the benefits and costs of photovoltaic module installation and usage and you'll find that using these pieces of solar energy equipment can be a wise investment.
