Solar heating system

There are many applications of solar energy, but one of the most popular and useful applications is heating. Solar energy can be collected and stored to create heat, which reduces consumption of nonrenewable resources as well as the harmful environmental effects of traditional heating sources. Using solar heating can reduce monthly heating costs, cut down on hazardous air and water pollution, and even reduce allergens in the air we breathe. With all of the benefits of using solar heating, more research should be done to determine how we can use solar energy on a widespread scale.

How solar heating works
Solar heating works by absorbing energy from the sun and converting it into solar energy. In solar heating systems, energy from the sun is collected using solar thermal collectors. This creates heat that will heat up liquid or air. The liquid or air is then transferred to a building, pool, or or body of water for heating purposes. There are several different types of solar pool heating available.

Solar pool heating
Solar energy can be used to heat pools during all four seasons of the year. A solar heating system makes use of the existing pool filtration system along with a solar collector. In this type of solar heating system, the solar thermal collector absorbs the suns energy and stores the heat. The pool's filtration system pumps water through the solar thermal collector, and the stored heat is transferred from the collector to the water. There are several benefits of using a solar heating system for your swimming pool. One is that the solar heating system is less expensive to use than a heating system that runs on electricity. Another benefit of solar pool heating is that you can extend the swimming season into colder weather and still be able to use your pool. An attractive benefit to solar heating for swimming pools is that these systems require very little in the way of maintenance. The major disadvantage to using solar pool heating systems is that they are very costly to purchase and install.

Residential water heating
Solar heating systems can also be used for residential purposes. Using a solar heating system in the home can reduce your need for traditional water heater usage by almost sixty-five percent, reducing costs and making your home more energy-efficient. Typical solar heating systems have a solar thermal collector and a storage pump. The solar thermal collector uses the sun's energy to heat the water and the water is then stored in the storage tank for later use. A traditional hot water heater can be used to heat the water further, but its use will be reduced since the solar thermal collector does some of the heating. The main benefit of using solar heating in a residential setting is that you can reduce your reliance on your traditional water heater and cut down the costs of heating your water. Another benefit of solar heating for the home is that it provides clean energy that does not contribute pollutants or allergens to your air and water.

Air solar heating
Solar heating can also be used to warm the air in homes and business buildings. The two types of solar heating systems for the air are passive and active. Passive systems simply collect and store warmth from the sun and release it slowly into the air of the building. Active systems also involve solar thermal collectors, but there are also fans or pumps that propel the warmed air throughout a space. The main benefit with solar heating for space is the same as solar heating for other purposes. It can reduce your reliance on more costly heating systems. One disadvantage of solar space heating systems is that it can be difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature and your home or business may become uncomfortably warm.
