Solar water heater
Solar water heaters can be expensive enough to make the idea of building one attractive. There are many different types, from solar showers that anyone can make, to solar collectors that require considerable effort. Before choosing which type to make, it is necessary to understand how much time, materials, and skill is required. There is a lot of work involved in making a large solar collector, so it helps to know how it will perform compared to the professional models.Solar showers are the simplest type to build. Essentially just a water container, they can be made from buckets, bags, tyre inner tubes, or coiled lengths of hose. Black is the preferred color because other colors reflect part of the sunlight way, while black absorbs the most light and generates the most heat. The inner tube of a car tyre is perfect because it is black and can carry enough water for a shower. Start by cutting off the valve just below the metal, leaving enough tubing to put a clamp around. Inner tubes usually have talcum power inside them, so rinse it out several times before use. Fill the tube with water, attach the clamp, and use some rope to hang it in the sun until the tube feels warm.
Batch solar water heaters are made by placing a metal water tank inside a heat box. The tank can be made from a standard metal drum or the inner tank of a water heater. Clean the inside of the tank several times, removing any sediment with a few hammer taps, and then paint the outside matt black. Install an inlet value, outlet value, pressure relief value, and a drain valve. The heat box can be made from two plywood frames and packed with styrofoam insulation. It should be large enough to fit the tank when it is resting on its supports and covered with glass or perspex. The inside of the heat box should by covered with aluminum foil to reflect sunlight onto the tank. Fill the tank with water and position the heat box so the inside is facing the sun. Batch solar water heaters do not perform as well as solar collectors in colder climates, but they work well in warmer climates, and sometimes too well as they are prone to overheating.
Solar collectors use a network of pipes exposed to sunlight to heat water. They can be the most difficult heater to build, requiring a good standard of plumbing, but they work better than other types. The professional models use multi-layered evacuated glass tubes but a basic collector can be made with black plastic tubing. A rack of piping is built with two lengths of large diameter pipe at the top and bottom for the manifolds, and several small diameter collector pipes in between. The collector pipes are spaced several inches apart so the reflected sunlight from the heat box or roof reaches all the pipe surfaces.
Passive solar collectors use the thermosiphon principle to move fluid around the system. They need to be inclined facing the sun so that cold water from the storage tank enters the bottom of the collector pipes. Hot water has a lower density that cold water, so it rises through the pipes and flows into the storage container. When it cools, gravity makes it sink to the bottom of the container and back to the collector pipes. Active solar collectors use a small pump to move water around the pipes, and this allows them to be laid horizontally on a roof.
Building a solar water heater can save a lot of money and provide adequate amounts of hot water. While a solar shower is simple enough that anyone can make one, it can be challenging to build a batch heater or solar collector without good plumbing skills. These heaters are relatively cheap to build, and using recycled materials lowers the cost even more. While not as efficient as professionally made solar water heaters, they are adequate for most water heating needs.
