Solar collectors

Solar heating systems can help home owners cut costs and help to reduce the pollution and environmental impact that more traditional forms of energy production cause. In order to do this, certain pieces of equipment are required so that energy from the sun can be collected, stored, and used. One of the types of equipment that is commonly used in a solar home is a solar collector. Solar collectors have several functions. They capture the sun’s energy, turn it into heat, and then transfer the heat. Solar collectors can be used to heat water, air, and solar fluid.

There are three major types of solar collectors available for use. These types are flat-plate solar collectors, evacuated tube solar collectors, and integral-collector storage systems. Each system operates differently and has its own benefits. Flat-plate solar collectors are the most common system, and are used in buildings where temperatures need to be below two hundred degrees. Flat-plate solar collectors can work with either water or air, so they provide solar water heating and solar space heating when used. A flat-plate solar collector is rather simple, consisting of an insulated box with a glaze, along with absorber plate that is a dark color. The two types of flat-plate solar collectors are liquid flat-plate collectors and air flat-plate collectors.

Liquid flat-plate collectors are able to heat water as it flows through tubes that are in or near the absorber plate. Liquid flat-plate collectors are also used for pool heating, but the insulated box usually does not have a glaze. Solar space heating can be accomplished with air flat-plate collectors. Air flows past an absorber made of metal, screen, or non-metallic materials and is heated. These solar collectors are not as efficient as the flat-plate solar liquid collectors.

Evacuated tube solar collectors are not usually used for residential purposes. Instead, they are used for industrial purposes when the temperature needs to be extremely high. The capacity of these solar collectors is up to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes them ideal for commercial use. The evacuated tube solar collectors consist of rows of glass tubes that are placed parallel to each other. The tubes themselves consist of the outer glass and a tube that contains a metal absorber. The metal absorber is attached to a fin, which is covered with an absorbent coating. The coating also reduces heat loss. Air is then removed from the space between the components of the system, creating a vacuum to prevent heat loss.

The third type of system, the integral-collector storage system, consists of at least one black tank or tube contained within an insulated box that has a glazed coating. Cold water enters the collection system and is heated before continuing on to a conventional water heater for extensive heating. The biggest drawback to using this type of system is that the system can freeze easily, so it should not be used in places where severe cold temperatures are normal.

There are many benefits to using solar collectors as part of an overall solar energy production plan. The solar collectors absorb and store energy from the sun, which completely eliminates the pollution associated with more traditional forms of energy production. Reducing the air pollution in one’s home can cut down on allergens significantly, making it easier for people with asthma and other breathing problems to breathe. Additionally, the sun’s energy is a renewable energy source, so using solar collectors eliminates the need to use non-renewable resources. Using solar energy can also be less expensive than using other forms of energy once the initial costs of supplies and equipment have been paid. While solar collectors and panels can be expensive, the monthly costs of heating water and air can be drastically reduced, making them a wise investment.
