Using solar energy is an ideal way to produce cleaner energy and reduce reliance on more traditional forms of energy production. However, some homeowners hesitate to use solar energy in their homes because of the way the solar panels used to produce this energy change the appearance of their roofs. Solar panels are very noticeable on a traditional sloped roof, and many homeowners just don’t like the finished appearance. Solar shingles are an ideal way to use solar energy in the home without having to change the appearance of your roof.
Solar shingles are solar cells that look just like regular roofing shingles. These come in a number of different varieties. Some solar shingles are sold in panels that look like a strip of regular shingles. When this panel is placed on the roof, it looks just like a group of several shingles placed together. Solar shingles are used to capture the photons produced by the sun and then turn them into energy. Solar shingles usually come in long strips of twelve inches in width by eighty-sixth inches in length. The great thing about solar shingles is that they can be attached directly to the cloth that is used to cover most roofs. Solar shingles are also dark in color, which makes it difficult to distinguish them from traditional roofing shingles.
Solar shingles consist of groups of solar cells that capture the energy from the sun and use it to create energy. Solar cells operate using the photovoltaic effect. Suns release units of energy called photons, and the solar cells capture these photons. Using a mixture of silicon, phosphorus, and boron, the solar cells create a consistent electrical charge that results in the production of energy.
There are several benefit to using solar shingles as opposed to using solar panels that must be affixed to traditional shingles. One of the major benefits of using solar shingles is that they tend to look better than solar panels affixed to regular roof shingles. Some solar shingles look just like regular shingles, so most people will not even be able to tell that you are using them. The dark color of solar shingles blends in with other roofs in the neighborhood, making your house look better overall.
The reduced environmental impact of energy production accomplished with solar shingles is an added benefit of using this technology. When traditional energy production methods are used, there are several problems that affect the environment. One is that harmful byproducts are created, which can lead to air and water pollution or even health problems for those in affected areas. Another environmental impact of traditional energy production is the use of fossil fuels and other nonrenewable energy sources. When you use solar shingles, you are using a renewable energy source so you are not depleting the natural resources of the environment.
Cutting monthly energy costs is also a possibility when you use solar shingles. Some traditional methods of energy production cost up to hundreds of dollars each month. While installing solar shingles can be expensive, the monthly costs of energy production can be greatly reduced, making the cost of energy less expensive over time. The savings can be put in a savings account for emergency use, or can be put into home repairs, car repairs, or other important projects.
While using solar shingles is advantageous in many situations, there are some drawbacks to using this equipment. One is that the dark color may not work for a light-colored house. Until solar shingles are introduced in a wider selection of colors and styles, use may be limited. Another disadvantage of using solar shingles is that they may not be the most efficient use of solar energy. However, they do do the job of capturing the sun’s energy and using it for energy production, so they are a good substitute for more harmful and costly forms of energy production.
