The environment is a top priority on many people’s list. This is because of the increase in concern over the world climate and global warming, and how it is impacting the planet. This has caused many to look for ways in which they can reduce their carbon footprint so that they have as small of an impact as possible on the environment. One of the ways in which some people are doing this is through the use of a solar thermal collector. This device is one that uses the sun’s energy to gather heat. It comes up with a way in which it can absorb the available sunlight to convert it to heat through the use of solar hot water panels.
While the solar thermal collector is a device that is most commonly used in power plants that rely on solar energy to provide electricity to their customers, it can also be used on private residences as well. The solar thermal collector works to produce electricity through the heat it has collected. This means that when the collector gathers heat, it causes the water in a tank to get hot enough that it boils and turns into steam, which then works to move a turbine which is hooked up to a generator that can then take on the energy that has been produced by the turbine.
There are various types of solar thermal collectors that can gather the heat needed. In private residences they are often used as a means of heating up a certain area or to heat water. One of the most common solar thermal collectors on the market is known as the flat plat. This device is found in a weatherproof box that has a special absorber sheet on it that collects the solar energy. When it is used to heat water there are pipes behind the collector that heats up the water inside and it sends the now hot water into a special storage tank which can then be used when needed.
Another type of solar thermal collector relies on the evacuated tube method in order to get the solar power needed to provide heat. The evacuated glass tubes that are located within the collectors gather up the heat and then pass that heat onto the solar absorbers that are located within them. Eventually the heat will also work to heat up water if it is going to be used as a water heater, or it can also heat up an antifreeze mix that can be used to run a fluid based space heater in the house. This design is preferred to the traditional flat plate design because of the rounded tubes’ ability to collect solar energy at different angles because of the curvature of the evacuated tubes. Also, reflective material is sometimes placed between the tubes to enhance the collection ability so that all available solar energy is gathered by this type of solar thermal collector.
The last type of solar thermal collector is known as the asphalt solar collector, and it is used in roadways. This system allows for a series of pipes to be embedded in to road’s surface. The black surface of the asphalted road allows for the heat to be absorbed properly in the pipes. This system is an effective one as the surface of a road can be a lot hotter than the surface of the air at the time. This type of solar thermal collector is used to help clear the roads, bridges, and playground areas of ice and snow when it collects during the colder winter months.
A solar thermal collector is a way to help out the environment by relying on the clean and renewable energy of the sun in a manner that will help to reduce the amount of traditional energy sources that are used. This means a lessening of you environmental impact.
