I currently have an electric Hayward heater for my inground swimming pool. I am considering converting it to a solar system by installing solar panels on top on my pool house/building. Electricity rates have begun to run so high the last couple of years, I can't afford to use the heater much past August.

Is this something I can do myself, and at a relatively low cost?

You are right on the money with this one. Great article. I actually installed a solar system on my pool this year and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. I ordered the panels online and installed them myself. It took one afternoon and was a breeze. Though I didn't have much experience in doing something like this, I was able to find detailed directions online at AboutSolar.net If you don't have heat on your pool now, or are just tired of paying for gas/electric, this is the way to go.
